Spoiler alert if you’re not caught up. (Also, no need to read unless you’re curious.)
In reaction to the vitriolic hatred from many Lost fans over this week’s ep, I had a thought.
Readers/viewers are one of three things: philosopher, detective or adventurer.
None is better or worse. An adventurer wants to be thrilled. A detective wants answers. A philosopher (me) wants something that makes her think ‘bout stuff.
This week’s episode did not thrill nor provide many Answers, but it did highlight—in a way that I found interesting—two big themes that made me reflect on my life a bit.
1) Don’t Think versus Think*
It’s interesting to discover that Jacob/ManInBlack do not represent Good/Evil, but rather Person Who Is Content To Just BE Where He Is vs. Person Who Wonders What Else Is Out There And Wants Answers.
2) The need for external validation
Wanting to be patted on the head, told you’re special. The child inside us who still looks around and complains “But HE got more!” Interesting to see that Jacob too went through this unflattering phase.
Anyway, it made me think about how these two ideas drive our lives.
So I enjoyed it, even if the plot/mysteries still have some holes.

* Some might call this “Man of Faith” vs. “Man of Science” but I don’t like that for some reason.
