Parisian Jean Rougette is humbly declining public adulation after the noble citizen found and returned a stolen Monet painting that miraculously appeared among his possessions.
Mssr. Rougette was taking inventory of his belongings when he happened upon the painting, likely stashed there by a drifter.
A simple Google search confirmed it was Monet’s The Garden, stolen last month from The Louvre by a dare-devil thief. Authorities have still not been able to catch that handsome cat-burglar.
Mssr. Rougette said the only appropriate action was to return it to the museum for a modest fee.
“The painting would not be able to be sold on the black market anyway, as the handsome thief no doubt discovered,” he said.
Mssr. Rougette is available to comment on art theft, drifters, society’s conception of heroes, and Monet’s Giverny period.
